Burial in a Crypt or Columbarium
Burial in a Crypt or Columbarium
A Distinguished Choice in Montréal
Mausoleums are large buildings that offer different alternatives to in-ground burials. They house many crypts and indoor columbaria, allowing families to visit their loved ones year-round, regardless of the weather.
Crypt: Tomb or space developed in a mausoleum to receive one or more coffins.
Columbarium: Funerary building or installation designed for the internment of the deceased's ashes. These installations can be indoors or outdoors and include niches, in which one or more cinerary urns are placed. The plural form of columbarium is columbaria.
Niche: Space, windowed or not, developed in an indoor or outdoor columbarium to receive one or more cinerary urns in perpetuity. Outdoor niches are in marble whereas indoor ones can be either in marble or glass.
A crypt burial is the insertion of a casket into a crypt, inside a mausoleum, which provides an indoor space for meditation protected from the elements. The outer surface of the crypt can then be personalized with engravings and ornaments.
Interment (or burial) in a columbarium is when a cinerary urn is placed in a niche. Columbaria can be indoors (in a mausoleum) or outdoors (in an installation). Niches in an indoor columbarium can be glazed, allowing the urn to be accompanied by decorative items or photographs reminiscent of the deceased. Like crypts, niches in an outdoor columbarium can be personalized with engraving and ornaments.
